To ensure your study experience in Quebec complies with current laws and regulations, it’s crucial to understand and adhere to the obligations of international students. This checklist will detail the essential requirements you must follow throughout your academic stay at UQAM.

Remember, non-compliance with these obligations can lead to serious consequences, such as losing international student status and expulsion from Canada. Therefore, it’s of utmost importance to be aware of the information provided below and to follow it rigorously.

Here’s an overview of the main obligations for international students at UQAM, which you’ll find in more detail below:

  • Have valid documents (Quebec Acceptance Certificate [CAQ] and study permit [SP]) for the entire program and until final grades are received. (The documents must be sent to the Registrar’s Office at the address etudiants_internationaux@uqam.ca.)
  • Studies of less than six months: Possibility to do a single term without documents (exchange student or independent student).
  • Maintain full-time enrollment:
    • Undergraduate: Minimum of 12 credits in the fall and winter terms. Part-time enrollment is allowed in the final term of study only.
    • Graduate and postgraduate: Full-time enrollment, fall, winter, and summer.
    • DESS and professional master’s: 3 courses in the fall and winter terms and 2 courses in the summer term.
  • Progress and succeed in the study program (failures must be justified during the renewal of authorizations).
  • At UQAM, the obligation to maintain:
    • A GPA of 2/4.3 at the undergraduate level
    • A GPA of 2.7/4.3 at the graduate level
  • Adhere to work conditions:
    • 24h maximum off-campus during regular terms.
    • No limit for on-campus work.
    • Prohibition of working without full-time enrollment, even in authorized absence.
  • Maintain valid health insurance throughout the stay (RAMQ or automatically billed Desjardins).
  • Pay tuition fees: Course registration and official document requests are blocked at the Registrar’s Office with an unpaid balance.
  • Do not exceed 150 days in the territory without studying: beyond 150 days, the obligation to leave the territory or request a visitor record.
