CAQ and Study Permit

Foreign students coming to study at UQAM must obtain a CAQ (Quebec Acceptance Certificate) and the study permit acceptance letter prior to their arrival in Canada (with some exceptions). Some individuals are exempt from needing a CAQ and a study permit to study, notably those who are coming to study in a program of a maximum duration of six (6) months. Foreign students coming to study in a program of more than six (6) months (with some exceptions), must therefore obtain a study permit regardless of the length of their stay.

During your studies, you will probably need to renew your CAQ and study permit.

Visa and Authorization

Most foreign students need either a Temporary Resident Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization to enter Canada.

Student Work and Post-Graduation

During your studies, you may work on-campus and off-campus if you meet the eligibility criteria. If you have an internship, you will need a work permit to do it. Once your studies are completed, you may be eligible for a post-graduation work permit.

CSQ and Permanent Residence

Do you wish to settle in Quebec permanently after your studies? If so, under certain conditions, you could be eligible to apply for a Quebec Selection Certificate (CSQ), as part of the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ) at the end of your studies. This program is a simplified method of obtaining a CSQ, aimed at graduates with a degree from a Quebec university. It is also possible to obtain the CSQ through the regular program if you qualify. Once the CSQ is obtained, you can apply for permanent residence in Canada.
