Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)

Students from certain countries need a TRV to enter Canada. The first application is made from outside Canada, often at the same time as the study permit application. Its expiration date is often the same as that of the study permit.

Are you a student in Canada and your TRV expires at the same time as your study permit? You can apply for the TRV in Canada once you have received your new valid study permit.

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

Students exempt from the requirement to have a TRV (with some exceptions) and arriving in Canada by air need an eTA to enter Canada. The eTA can be valid for up to 5 years or until the expiration date of the passport. Normally, when you make your first study permit application from outside Canada, you receive an eTA with the acceptance letter of your study permit application.

If you renew your study permit from May 1, 2017, or after this date, you should also receive an eTA.

For more information or to check if you need an eTA, visit the IRCC website.
